“Stanford’s not Ivy League,” she muttered to buy time. “They didn’t do anything. I was alone and confused. And my father insisted I needed the prestige of a Stanford degree.”

“Drew was only a baby. He needed his mother,” Thomas declared flatly.

“And his father.”

Thomas’s eyes narrowed. “Not according to you.”

Catherine sighed, annoyed that her quick temper had gotten ahead of her brain. “Well, maybe I was wrong, but I made the best decision I could at the time and I’d do it again.” She paused to regroup. “Look, I’m sorry. You have every right to be upset, but that doesn’t change anything. I signed a contract giving my parents custodial rights, but you didn’t. To get Drew back, we need to live together and approach my parents as a happily reconciled couple. And if they won’t sign him back over to us, then we’ll have to sue them for custody.”

Body taut, Thomas scowled. “You seem to have it all worked out.”

“I know this would be a disruption in your life, but my attorney assured me it’s the best way.”

“A disruption?” He snorted. “That’s the understatement of the century. What if I don’t want a family and wife?”

Although they had been apart for many years, the question still hurt. “You already have us. We just haven’t been here.”

“Exactly. Which is the way you wanted it.”

Hep YA kitapları sevmediğimden bahsediyorum, sonra böyle bir kitap çıkıp bütün söylediklerimi yediriyor bana. Neyse ki nadir bulunuyorlar da “YA kitapları çok seviyorum” demeye başlamıyorum.

Ben de farkındayım, yukarıdaki hap kadar özet kitapla ilgili hiçbir şey açıklamıyor. Zaten kitaba başlayınca da yaklaşık 100 sayfa insanın aklını iyice karıştırıyor. Ama devam ettikçe görüyoruz ki bu kazara yapılmış bir şey değil, yazarın okuyucuyu hazırlaması. Neyse, bir kısa özet de ben verip iyice karıştırayım aklınızı:

Taylor 11 yaşında annesi tarafından terk edilmiş, şimdi 17 yaşında bir kız. Suça eğilim göstermiş çocukların okuduğu bir yatılı okulda kalıyor. Bu sorumluluğu almak istemese de “bölge savaşları” için okulun lideri seçiliyor. Zaten yeni görevi yüzünden tedirgin olan Taylor; bir de akıl hocası, arkadaşı ve kendisine yakın olan tek yetişkin Hannah ortadan kaybolunca iyice huzursuz oluyor. Taylor bu kayboluşun annesiyle ilgili olduğundan emin olsa da elinden beklemekten başka bir şey gelmiyor. Zaten bölge savaşlarındaki rakiplerinden biri olan Jonah Griggs ve her gece rüyasında ona bir şeyler fısıldayan çocuk onu yeterince oyalıyor.

YA bir kitap ve benim karakterlerle ilgili problemim yok, çok şaşkınım. Ama karakterler dışında 1-2 durumdan da bahsetmeden olmaz.

Her ne kadar geçmişle bağlantılı olsa da “bölge savaşları” bölümleri fazladan eklenmiş hissi uyandırdı. Bölge savaşlarından kısaca bahsedilip ayrıntıya girilmeseydi belki de daha iyi olurdu. Birkaç savaş hareketi gösterip sonra kitap başka notkaya çekilince, kitabın (en azından günümüzde geçen bölümlerinde) olmasa da olur gibiydi. Geçmişten açıklama yapılacak diye oraya konmuş galiba ama kitabın ana konusu ve devamlılığıyla ilgisi yoktu. Sonu boş kaldı.

Kitabın ilk 100 sayfası kaç kere bırakmayı düşündüm hatırlamıyorum. Nerede geçmişten bir şeyler görüyoruz, nerede Taylor’ın rüyasına konuk oluyoruz, okulda neler oluyor… hiçbir şey net olarak anlaşılmıyor. Aslında bundan hem bir problem hem de övgü olarak bahsedebilirim. Çünkü o zorlu kısım bittikten sonra aslında yazarın okuyucuyu o 100 sayfayla hazırladığını ve kitabın gerçekten de öyle kurgulanmasının etkisini arttırdığını görüyorsunuz.

Marchatta, karakterleri derin, karmaşık ve gerçek yapmayı becerebilen bir yazar. Okuduğum diğer kitaplarında da durum böyleydi. Yalnız maalesef konuyu çok çabuk melodrama çeviriyor –ki herhalde bu kitabı gerçekten beğenmemin sebebi her şeyin dengeli olmasıydı. Jellicoe Road Melina Marchetta’nın okuduğum 4 kitabından biri. Üzülerek söylüyorum ki, okuduğum kitapları arasında da tek beğendiğim bu. Ama yazarın başka kitaplarına da şans verir miyim, bilemiyorum.

 “What are you looking at?” I asked Hunt, who’d hopped onto the vanity and was studying me with his greenish-gold eyes.
“It’s the skirt, isn’t it?” I tugged at the black skirt and frowned when it kept riding up past my knee. This was why I didn’t wear skirts and dresses. You didn’t have to worry you might have a Sharon Stone moment and unintentionally flash the new Suit from New York. And since I didn’t live my life like the movies, which was a damn shame, it was probably for the best that I kept the goods covered.
“I’m trying too hard, aren’t I? He’s just some guy. He isn’t the boss.”
Hunt stuck a leg straight out and began cleaning himself. “Nice. I’m going to take that as approval of my outfit. There’s nothing wrong with dressing to impress.” I finished putting on my makeup and smoothed out my olive blouse that matched my eyes. Now, hair up? No. That was too much effort. I needed to offset the skirt and shoes. Not that I was wearing heels. I wasn’t a lunatic. But dress flats were still better than my usual sandals or black sneakers. I ran my fingers through my long, brownish-blond hair and exited the bathroom where I was immediately accosted by Winchester, who wound through my legs, purring like there was no tomorrow. When I bent to scratch his head, he amped it up a notch. “I know, breakfast time. How could I forget?”
I went into the kitchen and refilled his dish. He’d have no qualms about taking me down if I ever thought about leaving without feeding him.
“You’re such a pig,” I said as he knocked me out of the way. Hunt appeared from out of nowhere, his black tail swishing. He shot me a look before knocking one treat out of the bowl and eating it.
“I guess I’ll be going now.” They studiously ignored me as I got my bag and slipped on my black flats at the door. Typical men. They had what they wanted, and I was no longer of interest to them.

Bu kitap için nereden başlasam bilemiyorum. Aslında kitabın büyük kısmında 3 yıldızdan fazla puan vermeyi düşünmezdim. Sonra ne oldu da 4 yıldızla bitirdim onu da bilemiyorum.

İkinci kitabın sonu, bu kitabın Lisbeth'e odaklanacağı gibi bir izlenim bırakmıştı bende. Ama bu kitap tam tersi yan karakterlere daha çok odaklanmış. Sapo'nun geçmişi, Servis'in kurulması ve gizliliğinin sağlanması derken İsveç'te bu hayali derin devlet nasıl işlemiş, önüne çıkanları, en ufak tehdit olarak gördüklerini nasıl ortadan kaldırmış gördük. Politik oyunlardan hoşlanmayan bir okuyucu olarak bu kitap benim için çok ama çok yavaştı. Kitabın son çeyreğine gelene kadar Lisbeth'in Lisbeth'lik yaptığı yerler dışında kitabın içine girmekte zorlandım. Ama mahkeme başladığı andan itibaren yine elimde bırakamadım.

Bu kitapta öncekilere oranla çok daha fazla kusur bulabilirim. Lisbeth'in sağlık durumu önce benim için fazlasıyla gerçek dışıydı.

Kafasından vurulup hiçbir yan etkiyle karşılaşmadan iyileşmesi saçma gelmişti. Ama sonra aklıma kafasından vurulup 4 günde kendine gelen İbrahim Tatlıses geldi ve

Lisbeth'in durumunun o kadar da gerçek dışı olmadığına karar verdim (Aynştayn mode: on)

Mikael'in sevişgenliğinden sıkıldım, Erika üzerinden yaratılan yüzeysel drama hiç ilgimi çekmedi, iki ana karakterin birleşmesi gibi bir beklentim hiç olmadı ama yine de sonu tatmin edici değildi. Sapo'nun Aptallar Masası'nın amacını bu kadar geç anlaması çok amatörceydi. Yıllarını bu işe vermiş insanların daha şüpheci yaklaşmasını beklerdim. Entrikaların dozu da kaçtı bu kitapta. Mahkemenin bitişi ve sorumluların tutuklanması da aceleye gelmiş hissi uyandırdı.

Ama neden bu kitaba 3 değil de 4 yıldız verdim bilmiyorum. Elim gitmedi 3 yıldıza. "Önceki kitapların hatrına" şeklinde bir bahane de uydurabilirim tabii... Hatta uydurdum bile...

Artık karakterleri tanıdığımız için bu kitap Ejderha Dövmeli Kız'a oranla daha hızlıydı. Bu sefer araştırılan olayın günümüzde geçiyor olması da tempoyu yükseltti. Birkaç bölüm içinde kitap kırılma noktasına ulaştı. Lisbeth'in geçmişiyle ilgili en büyük sırrını ve daha sonra başına gelen olaylar zincirinin arkasını gördük. Kitabın büyük bölümünde ortada gözükmese de bu sefer ana kahraman kendisiydi.

Bu kitabı ilk kitaba oranla daha çok beğendim ama yine de kusursuz değildi. Yine bolca ayrıntılı bir kitap ancak bu ayrıntıların hepsi işimize yaramıyor. Örneğin Erika'nın threesome ilişkilerden hoşlandığını biliyorum ama kitapta bunun devamında gelen, bu ayrıntıyı çok önemli hale getiren hiçbir şey yok. Peki bu bilgi gerçek hayatta ne işime yarayacak? Okuyucu gerçekten bu ve bunun gibi bir sürü şeyi bilmek zorunda mı? Ayrıca yazarın aynı şeyleri 3-4 karakterin gözünden tekrar tekrar anlatma alışkanlığı da devam ediyor. Bir süre sonra aynı şeyleri okumaktan kitap yorucu hale geliyor.

Ama kesinlike okumaya değer bir devam romanı, bahsettiğim küçük şeyler dışında bir kusur bulamadım. Ama ilk kitap için söylediğim puanlama bu kitap için de geçerli. Eğer buçuklu puan verebiliyor olsaydık muhtemelen bu kitap için de puanım 4.5 olurdu.
